Elaine Higgins, Historian

Having enjoyed (and taken for granted) normal hearing all my life, I was surprised when a son visiting me from overseas told me I had not heard a word he had said as he addressed me from behind. He advised having a hearing test. I was 75 years of age at that time and did nothing about his advice. However, as I was nearing my 80th birthday I realized I had a serious hearing problem and, as a consequence, sought help which entailed wearing hearing aids.

Wearing hearing aids helped enormously but, as my hearing continues to deteriorate, I found myself uncomfortable in my routine of book groups and other groups and withdrew from such activities altogether. Two years ago I found a notice re HLA of Snohomish with a meeting place near me. On attending the meetings I was astonished by the stories of hearing disabilities, many of them since early childhood, so many of the members have suffered and who have dealt with so admirably. The various speakers to the group plus information on the latest technology for hearing loss have helped me deal with my own rather insignificant hearing loss. I am grateful to have this source of support each month.
