My hearing loss began around the age of 3 1/2, probably dued to a series of sinus infections. We did not discover this until I entered school, and the school nurse checked students' hearing. Although I remained mainstreamed in public schools. By using lipreading and sitting in the front row, I progressed from second grade all the way through college. Until the passage of the American with Disabilities Act, my hearing loss was always a concern to potential employers. A combination of good job qualifications and an employer desperate to fill a vacancy usually got me a job. Over the years, my hearing did deteriorate, however, ten years ago I received the cochlea implant I have now. I have been involved with the HLA (formerly SHHH) for over 25 years. Though it I h've not only found support, but have made many friends as well. It is ther "safe haven" where I know I'll find acceptance.
